• Q: How to replace the rack and pinion inner tie rod (Magnasteer) on 2006 Cadillac DTS?

  A: In order to replace the Rack And Pinion inner Tie Rod (Magnasteer) start from placing the steering gear in a vise and remove it from the vehicle. Remove the inner vehicle and lower Tie Rod knob, using the inner Tie Rod wrench (J 34028) to clamp the inner Tie Rod housing firmly while preserving the original steering gear preload adjustment setting to avoid damaging the parts. Remove shock dampener from the inner Tie Rod housing and slide it back on the rack. Locate a pipe wrench and position it on the rack next to the inner Tie Rod housing. Have the lever of the wrench facing the inner Tie Rod housing and then turn it counter clockwise until it comes off from the rack. Do this for the inner Tie Rod housing and inner Tie Rod. Clean threads of the inner Tie Rod and rack before applying loctite 262, or equivalent, if necessary. Install and tighten the inner Tie Rod on to the rack and tighten it to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) with a torque wrench and inner Tie Rod wrench, (J 34028). Repeat the process for the inner Tie Rod, and make sure about proper staking of the inner Tie Rod assembly housing to the male rack if necessary. Ensure the stakes with a 0.25mm gage to make sure that they are secure and then slide the shock dampener over the inner Tie Rod housing and install the steering gear following the assembling of the Rack And Pinion boot.
