  • Q: How to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube on 2006 Cadillac DTS?
    A: To change out the Rack and Pinion Boot and breather tube from the vehicle first use the keystone clamp pliers(J 22610) to pull off the outer tie rod and the hexagon jam nut from the inner tie rod assembly. Then, detach the tie rod end clamp from the Rack and Pinion Boot and pull out the clamp on the Rack and Pinion Boot with side cutters to dispose of the clamp. In case there is a breather tube, label its free end at the gear assembly prior to removing the Rack and Pinion Boot and breather tube. For assembly, install a new boot clamp to rack & pinion boot and apply grease inside the assembly in inner tie rod assembly and Rack And Pinion gear assembly before installing the Rack and Pinion Boot into the inner tie rod assembly. If necessary, install the breather tube, aligning it with the mark made in the process of removal and the molded nipple for the Rack and Pinion Boot. Check to make sure the Rack and Pinion Boot is not twisted or puckered; if required, adjust it manually before placing it in the groove of the gear assembly. Keystone clamp pliers (J 22610) should be used to install and crimp the boot clamp on the Rack and Pinion Boot and pinched to install tie rod end clamp to the Rack and Pinion Boot . Lastly, loosen and insert the hexagon jam nut onto the inner tie rod assembly to finalize the assembly of the outer tie rod assembly.
