Cadillac DTS Upper Steering Column Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Upper Steering Column Bearing in a manual tilt, column shift on Cadillac DTS?
A: A manual tilt, column shift vehicle requires disabling the sir coil before upper bearing steering shaft replacement. Uninstall the Steering Wheel off the column before moving onto the column extraction from the vehicle. The next stage removes the Steering Wheel theft deterrent lock assembly along with the wire harness assembly and turn signal and multifunction switch assembly. Pull out the tilt spring and the linear shift assembly along with the a/t shift lock control assembly and shift lever. Steering shaft position sensors require boot seal , steering shaft seal , sensor retainer , steering wheel position sensor and retaining ring removal to perform repair work. Start by eliminating the boot seal and steering shaft seal and sensor retainer and retaining ring and seal from the Steering Column support assembly. Install the j 21854-01 pivot pin remover tool to extract the two pivot pins from inside the Steering Column support assembly. Delink the tilt head assembly from the Steering Column support assembly yet maintain the steering shaft attachment before removing the assembly from the steering shaft assembly . The last step involves removing the bearing assembly from the tilt head assembly. Place the bearing assembly inside the tilt head assembly followed by installation of the steering shaft assembly into the tilt head assembly. Proceed by mounting the Steering Column tilt head assembly and the steering shaft assembly inside the Steering Column support assembly. Apply gm p/n 12346293 (Canadian P/N 992723) lubrication to 3 stake points on the pivot pins before installing both pins onto the Steering Column support assembly. Position sensors require the installation of retaining rings alongside Steering Wheel sensors and sensor retainers followed by steering shaft seals and boot seals. The installation process begins with seal application followed by retaining ring addition then sensor retainer placement then steering shaft seal placement and ending with boot seal application. When no sensor is present these same parts should be installed. Start by installing the linear shift assembly and a/t shift lock control assembly followed by the switch lever before setting the tilt spring as your next step. Complete the installation with the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly and wire harness assembly and tilt spring. Reinstall the Steering Wheel theft deterrent lock assembly first followed by reinstallation of the Steering Column and the Steering Wheel onto the column before enabling the sir system.
