Install the handle assembly into the tailgate following Fastener Notice in Service Precautions before securing nuts behind the handle assembly from the tailgate end and torque the bolts to 9 N.m (80 lb in). Snap the actuator cable assembly to the handle before securing the liftgate trim panel.

    The tailgate release handle on the avalanche requires initial bezel and linkage rod retainer removal from the Tailgate Handle before handle replacement. Begin with bolt removal from the handle's tailgate attachment and continue by disassembling the tailgate spoiler and extracting the handle. First install the new handle within the tailgate before tightening 3 bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) torque. Reinstall the tailgate spoiler followed by handling the linkage rod reattachment before adjusting the Tailgate Latch. The Tailgate Handle bezel needs to be reinstalled during this step.

    Service technicians must remove adhesive blocks from the tailgate handle after freeing the upper retaining tabs. When installing the latch handle bezel make sure to use an end gate that is fully closed while also cleaning the sheet metal at both sides of the opening using an alcohol wipe. Fit the bezel at the opening's bottom section inside the end gate while removing protective tape from both sides of the foam block. Push the bezel ahead to lock the upper integral tabs while a firm palm squeeze activates the foam adhesive along both outside edges. The upper integral locking tabs require a slight downward pressure using a small flat-bladed tool at specific points until they release. After setting the blocks in position check that the end gate panel adheres to both foam blocks correctly.
