Extension Housing Seal, Rear

The procedure begins with vehicle elevation and shield and front propeller shaft removal. Then the transfer case output shaft dust seal must be extracted along with the transfer case front output shaft seal. Begin by removing both the seal that protects the front output shaft dust and the front output shaft seal itself. The front output shaft seal protector (J 44636-2) goes onto the front output shaft of the transfer case after which the front output shaft seal can be mounted on the protector. The front output shaft seal installer (J 44636-1) should be utilized to appropriately set the front output shaft seal before both components are extracted from the output shaft. The front output shaft dust seal installation must be followed by front propeller shaft attachment to the transfer case then verifying transfer case fluid levels and reinstalling the transfer case shield before slowly lowering the vehicle.

Next, remove the rear output shaft seal and inspect the rear output shaft bushing for any scoring or wear.

It is placed on the transfer case front output shaft to assist in installing the front output shaft seal.

Install the front output shaft seal onto the protector and use the Front Output Shaft Seal Installer (J 44636-1) to install the front output shaft seal.

Remove the transfer case from the vehicle and take out the transfer case input shaft seal.

Use the J35870 for seals from the start of production to midyear 1999, or the J43484 for midyear 1999 and later seals.

Damaging the sealing surfaces may lead to leakage or necessitate component replacement.

Detach the rear propeller shaft from the transfer case and remove the rear output shaft seal.

Use the Transfer Case Rear Bushing Remover and Installer (J45380) by installing the finger section in front of the bushing, attaching the tube and forcing screw, and then using a wrench to remove the bushing.
