Q: How to Replace a Shock Absorber in a Suspension Strut Assembly (FE1, FE3) on 2000 Cadillac DeVille?
A: To change the strut assembly (FE1, FE3), remove the three bolt-on the strut tower. Lift the vehicle, and hold it in position with the frame to have the free control arms. Next, you need to take out the wheel and tire and then unlock the wheel speed sensor. Remove the wheel speed sensor bracket with it Brake Line bracket from the strut without damaging the coating on the suspension coil spring, which can cause premature failure. The strut to knuckle should be scribed, then the strut to knuckle bolts taken out and strut removed from the vehicle. For installation, it is advisable to align the strut with its position taking care of the fasteners precautions. Install the three strut tower bolt and washers and tighten them to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Set the scribe marks on the Steering Knuckle to the strut and install the new strut to the knuckle bolts and nuts. Reconnect the Brake Line bracket and the wheel speed sensor bracket to the strut, plug in the wheel speed sensor connector, and torque the strut to knuckle bolts to 147 nm (108 ft. Lbs.), the Brake Line and wheel speed sensor bracket to 17 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Lastly, put on the wheel and tire, tighten to 125 nm (80 ft. Lbs), and lower the vehicle.
