2000 Cadillac DeVille Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should one safely handle gas charged shock absorbers during maintenance on 2000 Cadillac DeVille?
A: Gas charged shock absorbers contain high pressure gas that should not have its snap ring removed from inside the tube top as this action can cause severe injuries to the body through dangerous gas expulsion force. Wear protective glasses before drilling the shock absorber because center punching requires personal protective equipment and also prevent shock tube puncture during the process. The shock tube base must receive a 40 mm (1.6 inch) indentation around its lower area using a center punch tool. Secure the shock absorber inside a vise when it extends fully horizontally. Drill a hole at the center punch mark using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit so that gas or gas/oil mixture can escape; protect from oil discharge by using shop towels. Drill a second hole in the center of the tube by using the same drill bit along a center punch indentation. Make sure to use shop towels for catching the oil during the exhausting process. Holding the shock absorber with the hole facing down, move the rod through the tube in order to drain all the existing oil.
