2000 Chevrolet Camaro Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper ball joint on 2000 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: You need to lift your vehicle properly before starting the upper Ball Joint service work. Remove the tire and wheel. Place your floor jack beneath the shock absorber mounts on the lower Control Arm during operations to retain the spring and Control Arm position. Let the floor jack apply downward force on the shock mount below the lower Control Arm before you take out and discard the upper Control Arm cotter pin. After taking out the upper Control Arm nut you must raise the Steering Knuckle with a floor jack. To disconnect the top Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle use tool j39549. When the upper Control Arm is lifted you should drill through the four rivets 6mm deep with a 1/8 inch drill and then use a 1/2 inch drill to remove the rivet heads. A small punch follows to detach the upper Ball Joint. Put the new upper Ball Joint into position loosely within the upper Control Arm before removing the Steering Knuckle support system. Place the upper Ball Joint onto the Steering Knuckle and fasten the upper Control Arm nut loosely. Install the service kit bolts of the Ball Joint according to torque values from the kit documentation. When installing the upper Control Arm nut apply 39 foot pounds of torque but never loosen it to line up the cotter pin slot. The Control Arm nut may be torqued 1/6 turn past the required torque to complete installation. Insert the new cotter pin inside the upper Control Arm and take away the floor jack supporting the shock absorber seat. Then put on the tire and wheel before lowering the vehicle.
