2001 Chevrolet Camaro Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the upper ball joint on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: Start servicing and fixing the upper Ball Joint by properly lifting and securing the vehicle. Remove the tire and wheel. Keep the shock absorber location under the floor jack while you support the spring and lower Control Arm during their installation and removal. Put a floor jack under the shock absorber anchorage on the lower Control Arm before you take off and throw away the upper Control Arm cotter pin and nut. Put the Steering Knuckle on a floor jack but split the upper Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle using the Ball Joint/tie rod separator tool j 39549. Raising the upper Control Arm lets you drill out four rivets 6mm down using an 1/8" drill bit until you reach the rivet heads with a 1/2-inch bit then push out the rivets with a small punch. Put the new upper Ball Joint in place then take away the Steering Knuckle holder to install the Control Arm upper section. Secure the upper Control Arm assembly to the knuckle and place the steering joint. Tighten the top Control Arm nut by hand. Fasten the upper Ball Joint service kit pieces according to the torque settings from your Ball Joint kit. Tighten the upper Control Arm nut to 53 nm (39 ft. Lbs.) without moving the Control Arm nut to realign the cotter pin slot because excessive torque can happen. Fix new upper Control Arm cotter pin setup then take up the floor jack and put back the tire and wheel set while lowering the vehicle.
