2000 Chevrolet Prizm Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front shock absorber on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: Service and repair procedures for suspension struts require these three tools: holding fixture (J 3289-20), strut compressor (J 34013) and strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88). You will need holding fixture (J 3289-20), strut compressor (J 34013) and strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) for the procedure. Extract the strut assembly from your vehicle first. Mount the strut compressor (J 34013) into the holding fixture (J 3289-20) before you install the strut assembly into the strut compressor (J 34013) through the strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88). The spring should not be compressed past its safe limits because extreme overloading could cause the tool to fail along with potential hazards to the user. Next you should compress the coil spring before taking out the strut rod piston nut. Disconnect the compressed spring and take out the strut assembly from the strut compressor (J 34013). Next remove the following components which are part of the strut: rear assembly components include the strut insulator , strut mount , strut bumper , rear spring , and lower insulator . Test the strut rod for smooth motion with no odd sounds while keeping adequate length through compression and extension operations. The technician should install a new strut if any irregularities appear when testing. Heads up: when assembling the strut follow this sequence of parts installation: lower insulator then rear spring followed by strut bumper then strut mount then strut insulator. Reassemble struts with a sequence of lower insulator , rear spring , strut bumper , strut mount , and strut insulator . Fit the strut assembly into the strut compressor (J 34013) through its strut compressor adapter (J 34013-88) and slowly compress the coil spring without exceeding its torque limits. Secure the strut rod piston nut with a torque of 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.). After releasing pressure on the coil spring from the strut compressor (J 34013) users must uninstall the strut before reinstallation.
