2000 Chevrolet Prizm Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the steering knuckle on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: Start the Steering Knuckle service process by lifting the vehicle before providing support to it. Start by removing the front tire and wheel assembly then remove one abs wheel speed sensor bolt before placing it to the side. First remove the front brake hose bolt and hose severing them from the strut before setting them aside for future use. First remove a single bolt and two nuts from the lower Control Arm before extracting the drive shaft nut retainer and cotter pin from the drive axle. A helper should apply pressure to the brake pedal so you can remove the drive shaft nut. Flexible hoses require proper attachment to brake components that avoid causing damage. Use wire to suspend the caliper housing away from the brake hose while removing both brake caliper housing and Brake Caliper Bracket. Handle boot materials and inner oil seals gently for all systems while clearing the speed sensor rotor from damage in abs-equipped vehicles. Inspection of bearing backlash and hub deviation requires you to remove the brake rotor from its position. Tighten the lower side strut assembly nuts before the bolts' removal. Use the universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) to disconnect the outer tie rod from the knuckle while removing its outer tie rod cotter pin and outer tie rod nut. Begin by removing the two nuts and two bolts which secure the strut assembly from its lower end followed by removing the Steering Knuckle and hub assembly. A soft jawed vise should be used to clamp down the Steering Knuckle. Proceed with the correct method for Steering Knuckle removal only when it's essential for Wheel Hub and bearing and seal access. To replace the Steering Knuckle remove its cotter pin and ball stud nut. After extracting the ball stud from the knuckle using a universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B). Put the Wheel Hub and bearing and seal onto the Steering Knuckle but prep the threads on both lower strut assembly nuts with engine oil. Connect the wheels to the Steering Knuckle through its hub and bolts and nuts on the strut assembly's lower section while leaving all fasteners loose. Set the outer tie rod onto the Steering Knuckle by screwing in the outer tie rod nut until it achieves 49 nm (36 ft. Lbs.) torque. Secure the connection with a cotter pin through proper nut alignment by turning it up to 1/6 extra turn or reaching 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.) maximum torque. First install the cotter pin through the tie rod stud hole before checks are made for Steering Knuckle bearing backlash and hub deviation and then install the front brake rotor. As part of installation, fasten the brake caliper housing to the caliper bracket before installing the drive shaft nut with brakes applied by an assistant to reach 225 nm (166 ft. Lbs.). After placing the drive shaft nut retainer and cotter pin, install the Control Arm with one bolt along with two nuts then tighten the fasteners to 142 nm (105 ft. Lbs.). Tighten the two nuts on each strut assembly's lower mounting point to 274 nm (203 ft. Lbs.) before you install the front brake hose and its single mounting bolt to 29 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Securely attach the abs wheel speed sensor to the knuckle using one bolt torqued to 8 nm (71 inch lbs.). Reinstall the tire and wheel assembly then lower the vehicle before performing front wheel alignment inspection.
