2000 Chevrolet Venture Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the brake shoes on 2000 Chevrolet Venture?
A: A vehicle service and repair of brake shoes begins with vehicle lifting followed by vehicle support. The Brake Drum must be removed with caution while avoiding excessive stretch of the adjuster spring (J 38400). Begin shoe adjuster service by removing the adjuster spring with the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) through disassembly of the loop from the adjuster actuator tab and then extracting the loop from the actuator along with the straight end from the secondary Brake Shoe. The Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) should be used again to detach the return spring from the primary Brake Shoe by bending it toward the axle until the spring breaks away. After that detach the primary Brake Shoe followed by the adjuster actuator from the primary Brake Shoe along with the adjuster from the secondary Brake Shoe and the park brake actuator from the secondary Brake Shoe. Repeat the process of removing the return spring from the secondary Brake Shoe using the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) to pry it off just like previously described. Begin by cleaning the backing plate components with clean denatured alcohol before conducting the inspection for worn or damaged system parts which require replacement. Examine the Wheel Cylinder for leaks to check if dust boots need replacement. To install the braking system use gm p/n 1052196 brake lubricant (or equivalent) by coating it onto the six back up plate Brake Shoe contact areas together with adjuster screw threads and adjuster socket interior. The return spring should be installed to the backing plate before installing the secondary Brake Shoe. The Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover tool (J 38400) enables return spring installation into the secondary Brake Shoe before attaching the park brake actuator. One should properly engage the Brake Shoe by installing the adjuster screw and the park brake actuator before continuing. Put gm p/n 1052196 brake lubricant (or equivalent) on the adjuster actuator/primary Brake Shoe interface before installing the adjuster actuator to the primary Brake Shoe then installing the primary Brake Shoe with adjuster actuator to the backing plate for correct engagement. The Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J 38400) should be used to install a return spring into the primary Brake Shoe and an adjuster spring , where the straight end should face the secondary Brake Shoe and the loop end must attach to the adjuster actuator. Adjust the park brake actuator to determine the adjuster works correctly; if operation fails reinstall the adjuster mechanism. End your process by setting the brake shoes correctly then installing the Brake Drum before lowering the vehicle.
