2001 Chevrolet Venture Brake Shoe Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake shoes on 2001 Chevrolet Venture?
A: Vehicle elevation and support followed by tire-removal allows access to the Brake Drum to replace brake shoes. Follow these steps to remove the adjuster spring with the Brake Shoe spanner and spring remover (J38400): disengage the loop from the actuator using the tool before you remove the spring ends from both the actuator and secondary Brake Shoe. You should use this tool to remove the return spring from the primary Brake Shoe by prying it toward the axle until it snaps off. First remove the primary Brake Shoe then proceed with the adjuster actuator and adjuster from the secondary Brake Shoe and finally remove the park brake actuator. The same method should be used to detach the return spring from the secondary Brake Shoe before removing the shoe and spring from the backing plate. You should use denatured alcohol to clean all parts before inspecting brake system components for replacement of worn or damaged components and checking the Wheel Cylinder for leaks and damaged dust boots. You need to apply approved brake lubricant to both the adjuster screw threads and the six contact points on the backing plate and inside diameter of the adjuster socket for installation. First install the return spring to the backing plate and afterwards position the secondary Brake Shoe then install the return spring using the j38400 tool into the secondary Brake Shoe. Secure the park brake actuator onto the secondary Brake Shoe while making sure the adjuster activates correctly. Next insert the adjuster screw before using lubricant on adjuster actuator/primary Brake Shoe contacts and finally position the adjuster actuator to the primary Brake Shoe. The backing plate receives the primary Brake Shoe along with its adjuster actuator before using the j38400 to install both springs on the primary Brake Shoe and adjuster spring while checking adjuster operations. You should first operate the park brake actuator which extends the brake shoes and adjust both the shoes and park brake cable before reinstalling the Brake Drum along with tire and wheel.
