Q: How to service and repair the right valve stem oil seal and valve spring on 2001 Cadillac DeVille?
A: You will need j 38820, j 39313, j 43059, j 44211, and j 44214 to service and repair the right valve guide seal and valve spring. Have j 38820 (Valve Guide Seal Remover & Installer), j 39313 (Spark Plug Port Adapter), j 43059 (Valve Keeper Installer), j 44211 (Valve Spring Compressor), and j 44214 (Flywheel Holder). Take off the right camshafts first, then raise the vehicle so it does not drop. After that, take off the brace joining the engine Oil Pan to the transaxle case, and then remove the torque converter cover. Put the j 44214 in place and carefully bring the vehicle down. Take out the Spark Plug from the cylinder you are going to service and set the j 44211 base plate over the hole. Make sure the j 39313 is inserted into the Spark Plug hole, then keep the valve closed by using constant air pressure. Fit the arm and swivel nut of the j 44211 over the valve stud and tighten the swivel nut so you can get to the valve locks. Grip the valve locks with a magnet and loosen the swivel nut, then pull the arm to the side so the valve spring retainer and valve spring come out. Take the old valve guide seal in the j 38820, check it visually, and discard it once you have removed it. Put some clean engine oil on the valve stem and inside the new seal, and use the j 38820 to twist it onto the stem. Put the valve spring retainer and valve spring back in place, swing the arm so it sits over the retainer, and tighten the swivel nut to allow you to add the valve locks. Put the valve locks in place using j 43059, remove the swivel nut and arm of the j 44211, and repeat these steps for the rest of the valves that require service. Once you have let out the air, to proceed, take off the j 39313 along with the j 44211 base plate and put in the Spark Plug. Go on to fix any other cylinders, add the right camshafts, raise and support the vehicle once again, then remove the j 44214. At the end, fit the torque converter cover, tighten the bolts on the Oil Pan to the transaxle brace to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.), and then lower the vehicle.
