- Q: How to set the camshaft timing after the camshaft drive system has been disturbed on 2001 Cadillac DeVille?A: In order to set up the Camshaft timing which is critical when ever the Camshaft drive system has been disturbed, start by removing the left Camshaft cover, right Camshaft cover, engine front cover, three chain tensioners (fully retracted if still installed), and the Oil Pump. Put on the primary and secondary chain guides if they were removed. Turn the Crankshaft using the Crankshaft rotation socket (J 39946) until the sprocket drive key reaches around the 1 o'clock position. Mount the Crankshaft and intermediate shaft sprockets to the primary drive chain maintaining its timing marks adjacent to each other. Mount the crank and intermediate sprocket assembly over their respective shafts and turn the Crankshaft sufficient to mesh the Crankshaft key in the sprocket while maintaining the relationship between the timing marks, using the Crankshaft rotation socket (J 39946). Mount install the Camshaft intermediate sprocket bolt and tighten it over 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Next, load the main Camshaft drive chain tensioner or loosen the pressure shoe by tightening the tensioner bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Make sure the timing marks are lined up vertically and use the flywheel holder (J 44214) to restrain the Crankshaft. Lh cylinder head drive chain route the secondary drive chain along the inner row of intermediate shaft teeth and incorporate the re Camshaft sprocket with the Camshaft pick-up sensor. Route the secondary drive chain over the chain guide and install the exhaust Camshaft sprocket, inserting Camshaft drive pin into sprocket notch marked le (left head exhaust) at a right angle to face of cylinder head. Mount the intake Camshaft sprocket with the sprocket notch marked li (left head intake) into the sprocket notch marked li (left head intake) of the Camshaft drive pin while keeping its perpendicularity with the drive pin. Loosely tighten the exhaust and intake Camshaft sprocket retainer bolts and install the secondary Camshaft drive chain tensioner or release tension from the shoe when tightening the secondary chain tensioner bolts to 25 nm settings and Camshaft sprocket bolts to 120 nm settings. Double-check and ensure the presence of the Camshaft position sensor pick-up in the re Camshaft sprocket. Reroute the secondary drive chain for the right side cylinder head across the outer row of intermediate shaft teeth and repeat the above steps for right side camshafes which are labeled ri (right intake) and re (right exhaust) and make sure all timing marks are set before installing back the Oil Pump, engine front cover, right Camshaft cover, and left Camshaft cover.
