- Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2001 Cadillac Eldorado?A: Before replacing the rear brake caliper check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. When it stands above the midway mark between accepted fluid levels remove enough fluid until it reaches the midway level. Put the vehicle on stands and take off the tire wheel set. Lower the park brake cable socket at the front to disconnect it from the park brake connection point. A large c-clamp can force brake caliper pistons into the bore. Avoid damaging internal components by pressing the piston only 1 mm (0.039 inch). Detach the brake hose from the caliper using the bolt by throwing away both copper gaskets in it. Protect the brake caliper and pipe ports from fluid leaking. Disconnect the park brake cable from its bracket on the caliper and continue attaching the cable to the caliper lever. Use tools to unfasten the lower caliper pin bolt then shift the caliper to unhook it from the upper pin bolt. To reinstall the caliper brush high-temperature silicone lube on the braking parts when reusing them and place the caliper on the upper pin bolt before lowering it into its supportive bracket. Turn the brake caliper pin bolts to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.) and then take out the fittings from the brake hose end. Place new copper gaskets onto brake hose bolt and rejoin the brake hose to the caliper bolt before securing it with 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Position the park brake cable back onto its handle in the caliper. Then mount and fasten the park brake cable bracket with a torque setting of 43 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Connect the front park brake cable back to its connector. Then bleed the braking system and while the engine stays off apply the brake pedal gently up to 2 thirds of its travel before releasing it. Proceed with this process for 15 seconds then install the tire and wheel unit while lowering the vehicle.
