2002 Cadillac Eldorado Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on 2002 Cadillac Eldorado?
A: Check the brake master cylinder reservoir for fluid level before starting. Drain fluid from the reservoir to reach the center mark when the brake fluid level currently sits above the maximum level. Lift the vehicle and disconnect its tire and wheel assembly. Lower the front park brake cable and disconnect it from its connections. Apply a large c-clamp on the Brake Caliper Piston until it reaches 1 mm (0.039 inch) travel or less through the caliper bore. Doing more may harm the internal brake caliper components. Seal the brake caliper and hose connections before removing them to stop fluid leak. Detach the brake hose from its bolt and take out brake hose parts. Discard the threaded copper gaskets on each end of the brake hose. Detach the park brake cable bracket from the brake caliper keeping the park brake cable in place, then disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever on the brake caliper. Lift the brake caliper up using the lower pin bolt removal and detach it from the upper pin bolt. Before usage normalize the sleeve of used brake caliper retainers and apply high temperature silicone lube to the caliper pin bolts. Mount the brake caliper to the upper pin bolt. Mount the brake caliper into its bracket and fasten the brake caliper pin bolts at 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). Insert new copper gaskets onto the brake hose bolt and thread the bolt through it to the brake hose. Inset the brake hose over the caliper bolt onto the brake caliper part and seal with 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.) torque. Install the park brake lever and park brake cable to the brake caliper along with the bracket bolt. Tighten this bolt to 43 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Connect the park brake cable to its housing and purge air from the brake system. While the engine stays off press the Brake Pedal to 2/3 depth then release it slowly. Press the Brake Pedal 15 seconds and do this cycle until a strong brake reaction happens to let the brake caliper pistons and brake pads settle in their proper position. Install the new tire and wheel unit before letting the vehicle rest to its proper position.
