Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2001 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: For replacing the front cover of the engine, you should start by draining the engine oil and coolant and disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor and the electrical connector along with separating the air intake duct. Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts, the drive belt tensioner, and the Power Steering Pump. Lift and support the vehicle, and then disconnect the crankshaft balancer, oil pressure and Crankshaft Position Sensor electrical connectors, crankshaft position sensor shield, studs, and sensor put. Loosen the Oil Pan bolts to achieve clearance for the front cover installation, and then lower the vehicle and take out the coolant pump pulley bolts and the pulley itself. Carefully remove the radiator outlet hose and the crankshaft front oil seal so as to avoid any breakage. Next, take off the engine front cover studs and bolts and take the engine front cover and gasket. If replacing the front cover, also take out the bolts of the coolant pump, coolant pump, coolant pump gasket, oil filter adapter, camshaft position sensor, and oil pump gear set. It is advised that before installation of the new parts including the oil pump gear set, camshaft position sensor, oil filter adapter, clean the engine front cover and block surfaces. Install the coolant pump gasket to the front cover and the coolant-pump tightening the coolant-pump bolts to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) and in turn using the j 36660-a torque angle meter (J 36660-A) turn them an additional 80 degrees. Replace a new engine front cover gasket to the engine block then the engine front cover. Seal the engine front cover bolts and stud with sealant. Gm p/n 12346004 or equivalent, and install and tighten bolts and stud to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) using j 36660-a to torque them an additional 40 degrees. Mount the crankshaft front oil seal using the seal installer (J 35354) then mount the radiator outlet hose, coolant pump pulley, and security its bolts to a torque of 13 nm (116 inch lbs). The Oil Pan to front cover bolts should be installed while raising the vehicle, and they should be tightened to 14 nm (124 inch lbs.), the crankshaft position should be installed with application of sealant gm p/n 12345283 or equivalent in the studs, which should be tightened to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Mount the Crankshaft Position Sensor shield, reconnect the Crankshaft Position Sensor electrical connector, and mount the crankshaft balancer. Lastly, plug in the oil pressure sensor electrical connector and lower the vehicle, reinstall the Power Steering Pump and drive belt tensioner, attach the air intake duct, plug in the iat sensor electrical connector, and fill for the crankcase engine oil and engine coolant.
