2001 Chevrolet Corvette Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil, you will disable the sir system and remove the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module, upper and lower shrouds, and Steering Wheel. Disconnect the Steering Wheel column wire harness from the wire harness straps and remove the retaining ring and the air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft. Take precautions: make sure the wheels are straight ahead and center the sir coil assembly if necessary. Mount the existing sir coil assembly to the Steering Shaft assembly by aligning the opening of the sir coil assembly with the horn tower and the "locating bump" between the 2 localizing tabs of the lock housing cover and sleeve assembly, then press it to the Steering Shaft assembly. If an sir coil assembly is needed, the pre-centered sir coil assembly to the Steering Shaft assembly, orient it, and align the opening and remove the centering tab and dispose of it as well. Then, install the retaining ring on the Steering Shaft assembly and run the lower coil wire harness around the steering column, and the Steering Wheel column wire harness attached to the wire harness straps. Finally, reinstall the upper and lower shrouds as well as the Steering Wheel and the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module, and then activate the sir system.
