2002 Chevrolet Corvette Air Bag Clockspring Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Remove and Install the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on 2002 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To take away the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable, to begin with, disable the sir system. Next, take out the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module, then the upper and lower shrouds. Then, remove the Steering Wheel and pry the column wire harness out of the harness straps. Pop off the retaining ring and remove the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil from the Steering Shaft. For installation purposes, make sure the wheels are straight ahead and center the sir coil assembly if needed. Mount the existing sir coil assembly to the Steering Shaft assembly aligning its opening with the horn tower and the "locating bump" between the two tabs on the lock housing cover and sleeve assembly, then seat the sir coil assembly onto the Steering Shaft assembly. In case a new sir coil assembly is needed, put the pre-centered sir coil assembly to the Steering Shaft assembly, place it correctly, align the opening, remove the centering tab and dispose of it. Mount the retaining ring onto the Steering Shaft assembly, move the lower coil wire harness to follow the steering column, and reconnect the Steering Wheel column wire harness to the wire harness straps. Finally, re-installing the Steering Wheel, the upper and lower shrouds and the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module and enable the sir system.
