  • Q: How to service and repair the Rear Crossmember in the rear suspension on 2001 Chevrolet Corvette?
    A: To service and repair the rear suspension cross-member, raise and support the vehicle, remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Certain area of local codes prohibit display and partial air and fuel vapor functions faults that require action to clear the fault stored codes or rectification, restart the system normally, fortunately industry average miles driven were not within normal range on certain areas. Unplug the electrical connectors from wheel speed sensors, the real time damping (RTD) position sensor links in case it was equipped and the Shock Absorber solenoid electrical connectors if equipped. Take out the transverse spring and hold the crossmember with the transmission jack. Next is to disengage the stabilizer shaft and disengage the outer tie rod end studs from the rear suspension knuckles and remove the transaxle mount lower nuts. In the lower control arms and the rear axle, take out the Shock Absorber lower mounting bolts from the upper Control Arm. Loose the nut on lower Control Arm ball joint stud without removing it, and turning the suspension knuckles backward until the wheel drive shaft clears the Differential, supporting wheel drive shafts and rear suspension knuckles. Pull the electrical connectors and brake pipes off the crossmember, lift the transaxle under the transmission pan with a transmission jack, loosen the Rear Crossmember mount nuts and remove the crossmember with it, discarding the mounting nuts. For installation, line up the dowel pins in the crossmember to the frame rails and the transaxle mount studs to the crossmember, then install new rear suspension crossmember mounting nuts and torque them down to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). Remove the transmission jack, connect all the electrical connectors and brake pipes with the crossmember, and put in the transaxle mount lower nuts and inner constant velocity (CV) joints in the Differential. Mount the rear suspension knuckles to the lower control arms, the shock absorbers to the control arms, and outer tie rod end studs to the rear suspension knuckles. Install the stabilizer shaft to the crossmember, remove the jack stands from underneath the lower control arms, and the transverse spring install to the cross member. Finally, plug in the electrical connectors with the wheel speed sensors, rather Shock Absorber solenoid connectors in case, and rather rtd position sensor links in case fit eqipped, then setup the spring stud height to the size pre-recorded before the removal and put back up the vehicle tire and wheels and lower the car.
