Chevrolet Corvette Rear Crossmember Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Rear Crossmember in the rear suspension on Chevrolet Corvette?
    A:
Begin the rear suspension crossmember replacement by lifting up and supporting the vehicle and removing both tire and wheel assemblies. First disconnect all wheel speed sensors from their harnesses along with coils from park brake cables and remove electrical connectors from esc Shock Absorber harnesses when present. Beginning the process you should remove the rear suspension position sensors and inner tie rod end studs from the Rear Crossmember and lower Control Arms from the crossmember. Lower control arms, rear suspension knuckles, and tie rods will require support before separating the transverse spring from its position. Install the j 42055 transmission support fixture (J 42055) on a transmission jack then position the fixture securely to support the transmission. Support the crossmember first by disconnecting electric harnesses and brake tubing followed by removing the lower mount nuts. Position a transmission jack underneath to hold the crossmember. Handle all tasks with hand tools only to unscrew the mounting nuts at the Rear Crossmember before extracting the component from the vehicle and discarding the mounting nuts. During installation align the crossmember dowel pins to the frame rails and transaxle mount studs to the crossmember before using new crossmember mounting nuts. Use only hand tools to install and torque new rear suspension crossmember mounting nuts to 110 n.m (81 lb ft). Remove the j 42055 transmission jack from both the transmission and crossmember before connecting all electrical harness retainers and brake pipe retainers to their respective locations on the crossmember. Position the transaxle mount lower nuts before installing the transverse spring and lower control arms and inner tie rod end studs with the rear suspension position sensors. Whenever possible connect electrical connectors to esc Shock Absorber harnesses if present and park brake cables to actuator levers in addition to wheel speed sensor harness connectors. After installation of tires and wheels complete vehicle lowering then perform measurements to adjust rear trim height before conducting a wheel alignment procedure.
  • Q: How to remove the Front Cross-Member and Rear Crossmember on Chevrolet Corvette?
    A:
Then, remove the tire and wheel assemblies to take out the cross-member first by raising the car and suspending it before doing so. Remove the electrical connectors from the Wheel Speed Sensors, the real time damping (RTD) position sensor links if equipped, and the shock absorber solenoid electrical connectors if equipped. Next, take out the transverse spring from the cross member and hold the cross member with a transmission jack. It is in these breakdown steps that the stabilizer shaft is detached from the vehicle; outer tie rod ends studs are also disconnected from the rear suspension knuckles, and finally the nuts of the transaxle mount's lower will have to be removed. Take out the shock absorber lower mounting bolts from the lower Control Arms. Loosen the lower ball joint stud nuts but do not remove them and remove the lower Control Arm from the rear suspension knuckles. First turn the Steering Knuckles backwards until this would allow the wheel drive shaft clear the Differential then support the wheel drive shafts and the rear suspension knuckles. Remove all electrical connectors and brake pipes from the crossmember while supporting the transaxle at its lower part beneath the pan of the transmission with a transmission jack, and the rear crossmember mounting nuts off. Finally, unlock the crossmember from the vehicle and discard the rear crossmember mounting nuts.
