2004 Chevrolet Corvette Rear Crossmember Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rear Crossmember on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To change the Rear Crossmember, lift and support the vehicle, and remove the tire and wheel assemblies. Remove the electrical connectors from each Wheel Speed Sensor, real time damping (RTD) position sensor links when applicable, and shock absorber solenoid electrical connectors if applicable. Take off the transverse spring from the crossmember and use a transmission jack to support the crossmember. Then, take off the stabilizer shaft, disconnect the outer tie rod end studs from the rear suspension knuckles as well as transaxle mount lower nuts. Go ahead and unlock the shock absorber lower mounting bolts from the lower control arms and the upper Control Arm from the rear axle. Loosen the nut from the lower Control Arm ball joint stud but do not take it off; then turn the suspension knuckles back until the wheel drive shaft gets cleared from the Differential. Defense the wheel drive shafts and the real suspension knuckles dump all electrical connectors and brake pipes from the crossmember, and bolster the transaxle beneath the Transmission Pan utilizing a transmission jack. Take off the Rear Crossmember mounting nuts and remove the crossmember, discarding the mounting nuts. For installation, position the crossmember dowel pins to the hole on the frame rails and the transaxle mount studs to the crossmember and then install new rear suspension crossmember mounting nuts and tighten the new Rear Crossmember mounting bolts to 110 nm (81 ft. Lbs.). Take off the transmission jack from the Transmission Pan, connect all the electrical connecters and brake pipes back to the cross member and install the transaxle mount lower nuts. Mount the inner constant velocity (CV) joints onto the Differential-rear suspension knuckles onto lower control arms, and shock absorbers to the lower control arms as well as outer tie rod end studs into the rear suspension knuckles. Attach the stabilizer shaft to the crossmember, take the jack stands off from underside of the lower control arms and fit the transverse spring to the crossmember. Finally, link the electrical connectors to the wheel speed sensors, shock absorber solenoids if set up and the rtd position sensor links if set up, set the spring stud height to your measure taken before removal, install the tire and wheel assemblies, and bring the vehicle down.
