2001 Chevrolet Impala Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads on 2001 Chevrolet Impala?
A: First, check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level to replace the front brake pads. If it is in the middle between the maximum-full and the minimum allowable, then there is no need of removing fluids, but if it is higher then to reduce it to the midway level. Lift and assist the vehicle, then detach the tire and wheel assembly. Hand tighten two wheel lug nuts to hold the rotor to hub, compress front caliper piston into the bore of the caliper using a large c-clamp mounted over the top of the caliper housing against the rear of outboard pad until enough support is provided for the caliper to slide off the rotor. Turn and remove the c-clamp and the bottom caliper bolt without disfiguring the pin boot in swinging the caliper upwards to reach at the pads and the two retainer slides , from the caliper bracket. Check the disc brake mounting and hardware including the caliper dust boot for any damages and change any damaged parts. Examine the caliper bolts for rust or damage, and where present, use new parts, including bushings, for fitting. Install using a c-clamp to bottom the piston into caliper bore with an old Brake Pad or wooden block across the face of piston on the piston so as not to have any damage. Mount the two retainers to the caliper bracket, remembering that the wear sensor will be on the outside pad at the leading edge when the wheels are on forward rotation. Install the pads on the caliper anchor bracket and remove the support and reset the caliper over the front pads. After that, lubricate the bolt and folder boot prior to fastening the lower caliper bolt tightening it into 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs). Removal of the spoke wheel lug nut retaining the rotor to the hub, install the tire and wheel assembly, and lowering of the vehicle. With the engine off, bring the brakes up gently to about 2/3 of its travel just then allow the brakes to release slowly. Wait 15 seconds and repeat this process until a firm Brake Pedal is achieved, ensuring the correct seating of the brake caliper pistons and brake pads. Finally, fill the brake master cylinder reservoir to the proper level and burnish the pads and rotors.
