Chevrolet Impala Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on Chevrolet Impala?
A: Begin replacement of the rear brake pads by looking at the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level; drain out fluid until it reaches halfway between maximum and minimum marks. Lift and stabilize your vehicle. Afterward pull out the rear wheel unit including its tire. Apply a hand-tightened lug nut onto the rotor to hold it in place and compress the caliper piston through a c-clamp adjustment. Before moving down the caliper adjust the upper bolt while guarding the pin boot to let the caliper hang down without taking it off. Take out the brake pads and 2 pad clips from the caliper bracket to check the caliper mounting hardware and dust boot for problems that need replacement. Replace any old caliper bolts if they show signs of corrosion or wear. Bottom the piston through the caliper bore with a c-clamp and shield the face with an old Brake Pad or wood to safeguard the surface. Mount the 2 retainers to the caliper bracket alongside the wear sensor which must be placed toward the back edge of the outside pad. Guide the caliper so its top hangs over the installed brake pads before setting it down. Put silicone grease on both bolt parts and bolt boot followed by upper caliper bolt installation and bolt tightening to a torque value of 44 nm (32 ft. Lbs.). Change back the saved wheel lug nut from the rotor and set the tire plus wheel system tightly while matching previous marks and then lower your car. While keeping the engine off slowly push the Brake Pedal until it reaches two-thirds of its possible movement and then let it return to its original position. Gradually push the Brake Pedal once more for 15 seconds then do it again to properly position the brake pads and pistons. After filling the brake system to the correct level use the brakes to smooth out the rotors and pads.
