2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Put the Brake Master Cylinder on a workbench vise and work from its backside to access the primary Piston area. Check the reservoir cap area for damage before taking out the cap and diaphragm to examine them thoroughly for breaks or other deformities that need replacement. Use the smooth tool to compress the master cylinder's primary Piston while you remove the Piston retainer and then primary Piston assembly from the cylinder's opening. Place seals on the inlet and rear ports. Put filtered air through the front port at low pressure to pull out the secondary Piston plus primary and secondary seals and the return spring while discarding the parts. Use denatured alcohol to clean the inside and outside of the brake cylinder system plus install new parts when damage from cracks, pitting or corrosion appear. Use non-lubricated filtered air to dry all parts before applying brake fluid from a sealed supply of delco supreme 11(R) product or gm p/n 12377967 equivalent dot-3 brake fluid to lubricate the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and all necessary components. Attach the lubricated new primary seal and retainer together with the new secondary seal to the secondary Piston before adding the return spring and secondary Piston assembly. Install the lubricated primary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore. Slowly push the primary Piston down with a smooth tool. Add the new Piston retainer after installation and put everything back into its correct positions.
