2002 Buick LeSabre Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2002 Buick LeSabre?
A: Start by checking the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level. Drain fluid until the mark reaches midway between maximum and minimum acceptable limits. Secure the vehicle body then take out all tire and wheel parts from their position. Place a large c-clamp to push the Brake Caliper Piston into its bore and stop when the piston reaches a 1 mm (0.039 inch) compression without harming the internal mechanism. Detach the park brake guide bolt from the Control Arm and the brake caliper bottom bolt. Secure the brake caliper with mechanic's wire to shield the braking tube while supporting it with mechanics wire. Lift and clamp the brake caliper while removing inboard and outboard brake pads. Inspect Brake Pad retainers while working on the Brake Caliper Bracket. When reinstalling examine all suspension boots on the brake caliper bolt and replace any broken parts before testing each brake caliper pin bolt for wear and replacing as needed. Turn the Brake Caliper Piston counterclockwise by using a spanner wrench until it rests fully against the housing. The tomhole lines on the piston should align perfectly with the locking pins on the brake pads. Putting high-temperature silicone lube on the rear brake caliper bolts helps the installation process. Place the Brake Pad retainers and both brake pads into their slots. Lower the brake caliper onto the pads and bracket before fitting the lower caliper pin bolt which needs 27nm (20ftlb.) torque adjustment. Place the park brake cable guide bolt onto the lower Control Arm and fix it at 24 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Then reinstall the tire and wheel and position the vehicle with the engine off as you steadily push the Brake Pedal 2/3 of its range and release it gently. Keep pressing the Brake Pedal until you achieve solid feedback then refill the reservoir while blasting the brake components.
