2002 Buick LeSabre Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J29803-A ISO Flaring Kit on 2002 Buick LeSabre?
A: In order to replace the brake pipe, the J29803-A ISO Flaring Kit (J29803-A) should be used and always ensure the use of double-walled steel brake pipe to eliminate a failure of the brake system. Start with getting the proper size pipe and steel fitting nuts that are geared to the outside diameter of the pipe. Cut the pipe into square and the right length with a tube cutter, moving it a little at a time in one turn without pressure. Measure the original pipe to establish the correct length, for each ISO flare adding 3.2mm (0.125 inch). Mount the fittings prior to flaring and then de-bur both inside and outside diameters of the pipe using a de-burring tool. There are no traces of lubricant to be removed from the brake pipe and the J29803-A. Take the appropriate size collet and forming mandrel for the pipe size and insert the leading into the J29803-A holding it with a vise. Threading in the forcing screw until it touches the mandrel and then rotating it one full circle. Press the clamping nut over the brake pipe and seat the pipe into the collet with about 19 mm (0.750 inch) projecting beyond the collet and give the end of the pipe against the face of the mandrel. Then clamp the nut securely to stop the pipe from pushing out but still do not over-tighten the forcing screw to avoid an oversized flare. Continuing the process, tighten the wrench on the forcing screw until it bottoms, back out the clamping nut and disassemble the collet assembly. Take the diameter of the flare, which should be in the range of 6.92 to 7.28 mm (0.272 to 0.286 inch). Finally, use a tube bender to shape the new pipe to match the old one, but have a minimum clearance of 19 mm (0.75 inch) to all moving components or 13mm (0.50 inch to all vibrating components or 7mm (0.25 inch to any shielded lines unless clipped to a component).
