2002 Buick LeSabre Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal and housing on 2002 Buick LeSabre?
A: To replace Crankshaft rear oil seal and housing, drain the engine coolant from the cooling system, remove engine Oil Pan and Flywheel. Next, remove the Crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts and the housing itself, and finally, the Crankshaft rear oil seal. Do not cause any damage to the od surface of the Crankshaft when performing the process. Pull off any old gasket material from the rear oil seal housing of Crankshaft and cylinder block, visiting the bore and Crankshaft, and ensuring they are not damaged, and thus needing replacement or repair. For installation, the old Crankshaft rear oil seal should be removed and remove the gasket surface goods. Put on a new gasket onto the Crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolt threads for proper alignment, as right housing alignment is necessary to avoid oil leaks. Finger-tighten the Crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts for adjustment and push the gasket in such a manner that it does not exceed the housing. Put a film of oil to the sides of the rear cover aligner for easy installation and put it on top of the Crankshaft and twist it till it slides into the position. Check for any step height difference between the cylinder block Oil Pan flange and the rear oil seal housing flange using a straight edge and a feeler gauge, making any necessary adjustments. Tighten the Crankshaft rear oil seal housing bolts to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) and use the electronic torque angle meter (J 36660-A) to rotate the bolts an additional 50 degrees. After removing the rear cover aligner (J 41349), you should again measure the step height and make sure it stays within specification and tighten again, if necessary. Finally, install a new Crankshaft rear oil seal, the engine Flywheel, and Oil Pan, refilling the cooling system with engine coolant.
