The crankshaft balancer should be the first component to remove during the replacement process of the crankshaft front oil seal. The appropriate tool for removing the seal is the Seal Remover (J45000). An equivalent tool to the Oil Seal Installer (J29184) must be used to properly install the crankshaft front oil seal before reinstalling the crankshaft balancer.

Check the Crankshaft balancer together with the engine front cover for any surface damage. The outside surface of the Crankshaft balancer requires gm p/n 1050169 or equivalent lubricant before reinstalling the balancer after removing the seal installer (J35354-A). The service procedure for the front crankshaft seal begins with removing the crankshaft balancer before continuing. Carefully remove the protective sleeve from the new rear oil seal and install it onto (EN-47623) using a twisting motion until fully seated.

Take out the crankshaft rear oil seal and housing.

Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal and housing.

Inspect the crankshaft for nicks or burrs, repairing or replacing it as necessary.

Utilize the Seal Installer (J 35354) to install the new oil seal.

Reinstall the engine flywheel and inspect for proper fluid levels and leaks.

Loosen the T-handle until it stops to position the collar for installing another new crankshaft rear oil seal, then remove the attaching screws.

Place the housing face down on a clean surface supported by blocks of wood.

Apply engine oil to both the inside and outside diameter of the new seal, slide it over the mandrel until it bottoms against the collar of the J 38196 Rear Crankshaft Seal Installer, attach the J 38196 to the crankshaft, and tighten the screws to 5 Nm (54 inch lbs.).

Reinstall the engine flywheel, inspect for proper fluid levels, and check for leaks.

Pry out the crankshaft front oil seal using a suitable tool, such as a large screwdriver, while ensuring the crankshaft front oil seal bore and contact surfaces remain undamaged.

Remove the engine flywheel, taking care not to damage the crankshaft outside diameter surface or chamfer with any tool.

Remove the Seal Installer (J 35354) and coat the inside seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with lubricant GM P/N 10522497 or equivalent.

Loosen the T-handle until it stops to position the collar for installing another new crankshaft rear oil seal, then remove the attaching screws.

Apply engine oil to both the inside and outside diameters of the new crankshaft rear oil seal.

Remove the engine flywheel, taking care not to damage the crankshaft outside diameter surface or chamfer with any tool.

Pry out the crankshaft front oil seal using a flat bladed tool, such as a large screwdriver, while avoiding damage to the crankshaft front oil seal bore or contact surfaces.

Use a flat-bladed tool to pry out the crankshaft rear oil seal by inserting it through the dust lip at an angle and moving the handle towards the end of the crankshaft, repeating as necessary.

Attach the J 38196 to the crankshaft by hand or tighten the attaching screws to 5 Nm (54 inch lbs.).

Use the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer (J 34686) to coat the new crankshaft rear oil seal entirely with engine oil before installing it.

Use the Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer (J 34686) to install the new seal.

Remove the crankshaft balancer.

Coat the new crankshaft rear oil seal with engine oil.

Lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal with lubricant GM P/N 10522497 or equivalent, and use the Seal Installer (J 35354-A) to install the seal in the engine front cover.

Ensure that the lip of the seal faces the engine.

The J 34686 Rear Main Seal Installer (J 34686).

Reinstall the crankshaft balancer and inspect for any leaks.

Turn the T-handle to engage the collar and push the seal into the bore until tight against the engine block, ensuring proper seating, then remove the attaching screws and reinstall the engine flywheel.

Loosen the T-handle until it stops to position the collar for the next seal installation, then remove the attaching screws.

Remove the engine flywheel, taking care not to nick the crankshaft sealing surface.

Inspect the crankshaft, crankshaft balancer, and engine front cover for any wear or damage, and replace or repair these components as necessary.
