• Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2002 Cadillac DeVille?

  A: To overhaul the Brake Master Cylinder, first remove it from the vehicle and locking the mounting flange in either the bench vise so the rear of the primary Piston is exposed. Before unseating the reservoir cap and diaphragm, clean the surrounding area and check for cuts, crack, nicks or deformation on both parts and replace the affected parts. Reservoir of master cylinder should be removed and a smooth, round-ended tool should be used to depress the primary Piston and remove the Piston retainer then the primary Piston assembly from the cylinder bore. Plug the cylinder inlet ports and the rear outlet port and connect the low pressure, nonluration, filtered air into the front outlet port and removes the secondary Piston with the primary and secondary seals and the return spring. Discard primary Piston assembly, Piston retainer, and seals from the secondary Piston. Clean the interior and exterior of master cylinder, secondary Piston & return spring and check for cracks, score, pit, corrosion and replace the master cylinder if required. Take all components apart and let them dry with non-lubricated, filtered air and lubricate master cylinder bore, secondary Piston, return spring, and all overhaul components with delco supreme 110, gm p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667), other equivalent dot-3 brake clutch master cylinder from a non-tainted, sealed container. Mount the lubricated new primary seal and retainer as well as the lubricated secondary seal onto the secondary Piston then install the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly with the lubricated new primary Piston assembly to the cylinder bore. Depress the primary Piston with a smooth, round-ended tool after installing the new Piston retainer, and then reinstall the master cylinder reservoir and its cap and diaphragm before reinstalling the master cylinder to the vehicle.
