2002 Cadillac Eldorado Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the primary cam gear and timing chain on 2002 Cadillac Eldorado?
A: To replace the timing chain and sprockets, one first needs to remove the Oil Pump. Using the crankshaft rotation socket (J 39946), align the timing marks. Subsequently, it is necessary to pull off the second camshaft drive chains and the timing chain tensioner. Then, remove the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt and remove the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft intermediate sprocket as an assembly. For installation, the timing marks of the camshaft intermediate and crankshaft sprockets must be in alignment (also some may say vertically) in the installed condition. Mount the timing chain onto the cam sprockets which have the number 1 piston at the top dead center (TDC) with the keyway of the crankshaft aligned at the 1 o'clock position. Realign the crankshaft with the drive sprocket using the crankshaft rotation socket (J 39946), and fit the timing chain, crankshaft sprocket, and camshaft intermediate sprocket, as an assembly. Install the camshaft intermediate sprocket retaining bolt and tighten it to 60 nm (44 ft. Lbs.). Do not pull out the pin holding the tensioner while the secondary timing chains are yet to be installed. Connecting to install the timing chain tensioner as well as the secondary camshaft drive chains. Finally, pull out the pin from the release lever of the timing cycle, and while making sure that the timing marks are aligned vertically, reinstall the Oil Pump.
