2002 Chevrolet Camaro Harmonic Balancer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2002 Chevrolet Camaro?
A: The replacement of the crankshaft balancer begins with Drive Belt removal and vehicle suspension followed by the Starter motor uninstallation. First remove the Starter motor from the system followed by extraction of the transmission brace bolts (2,3) from m49 manual transmission units and the transmission brace itself. Starting with the cover bolts you should unscrew the flywheel housing inspection cover and then detach the cover itself. The process to replace the crankshaft balancer on vehicles with 4l60-e automatic transmission starts by removing the torque converter cover. The flywheel holding tool (J 37096) should secure the flywheel before you remove the crankshaft balancer bolt from the balancer by using the crankshaft balancer puller (J 38197-A). You should first position the leg of tool (J 38197-2) toward the opposite direction from the balancer. Once this step is complete you should install the bolts (J 38197-4) to the balancer before taking all tools (J 38197-1, J 38197-2, and J 38197-4) off the balancer. Place the key aside while oiling the seal area of the new balancer and positioning the key back into place before putting in the balancer. Insert the key slot of the balancer into the crankshaft position before mounting the balancer assembly. Apply torque to the crankshaft balancer bolt until it reaches 150 nm (111 ft. Lbs.) and complete installation using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) until the bolt angle reaches an additional 114°. The 4l60-e automatic transmission requires reinstallation of the torque converter cover after removing the flywheel holding tool (J 37096). With the m49 manual transmission you should install the flywheel housing inspection cover together with its bolts then tighten them to 9 nm (80 inch lbs.). Install the transmission brace along with its bolts (2, 3) while tightening both the brace bolts to 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.) against the engine block and the transmission bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). After installation of the Starter motor complete the operation by lowering the vehicle and performing the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure.
