• Q: How to replace the Rocker Shaft Spring Kit and valve stem oil seal on 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier?

  A: You need to take off the valve Rocker Arm cover first to work on both pieces. Wait until the engine cools down before taking out the Spark Plug to shield its threads and the cylinder head from harm. Set valve train parts in a logical order while removing the Spark Plug. Remove the Rocker Arm and Pushrod before starting to work with the currently serviced cylinder. Set the Spark Plug port adapter part number j 23590 into the Spark Plug port and direct compressed air at the valves to keep them from moving. Put the engine at rest then set the valve spring compressor (J 5892-D) to hold the valve spring compressed. Remove valve locks and cap afterward. Use the j 5892-d valve spring compressor tool to reduce valve pressure then unlatch and detach the valve spring together with its oil seal and spring seat. Start by placing the valve seat spring first and then apply the Valve Stem Oil Seal on top. After placing the valve parts in their right location put the valve spring compressor (J 5892-D) back on to compress the valve spring once more. Keep the valve locks steady while releasing the compressor tool by pressing them into the upper valve stem groove with grease if needed. Put valve locks into place and gently release valve spring compressor (J 5892-D) before taking off Spark Plug port adapter (J 23590). Fasten the Spark Plug with 15 nm torque setting before completing the process by installing the Rocker Arm and Pushrod while putting back the valve Rocker Arm cover.
