  • Q: How to replace the rear A/C hose in an evaporator system on 2002 Chevrolet Corvette?
    A: The process starts with recovering refrigerant from the a/c system by using the halogen leak detector (J 39400-A). The first step involves battery removal with heat shield and then Intake Manifold detachment. First cut the retaining nut securing the heater pipe bracket to the cowl to move the bracket for easier access to the refrigerant lines. First carefully remove the retaining bolt between the front Evaporator tube and rear Evaporator tube and quickly install caps or tape on the opened Evaporator tubes. Evaporator tubes need disconnecting with o-rings removed before the installer loosens the accumulator hose to Evaporator retaining bolt. After capping or taping the open Evaporator tubes properly, disconnect the rear Evaporator tube from the accumulator hose bracket and discard the o-ring. Beginning installation requires removal of the cap or tape on both the rear Evaporator tube and Evaporator followed by cleaning their sealing surfaces using a lint-free clean dry cloth. Fill the new o-rings with a light layer of mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil while preventing extrusion into refrigerant channels before seating them into the rear Evaporator tube and Evaporator. Secure the rear Evaporator tube through installation to the Evaporator while applying torque of 16 n.m (12 lb ft) to the accumulator hose to Evaporator retaining bolt. After cleaning the sealing area of the front Evaporator tube apply a thin film of mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil to the o-ring before installation. Perform this step while keeping the refrigerant oil in the marked area only. Use a retaining bolt to mount the front Evaporator tube to the rear Evaporator tube while torquing at 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Reinstall the heater pipe bracket onto the cowl stud then use a torque wrench to set the retaining nut to 10 n.m (89 lb in). Next install the Intake Manifold and battery heat shield and battery. After evacuating and charging the a/c system technicians will need to conduct a fitting leak test using halogen leak detector (J 39400-A).
