2002 Chevrolet Malibu Brake Master Cylinder Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2002 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Set the mounting flange of the Brake Master Cylinder onto a bench vise to access the rear side of the primary Piston while working. Prevent contamination of the reservoir cap area then detach it with the diaphragm to look for damages like cuts, cracks, nicks, or deformities on both parts. Replace defective components if found. Through the master cylinder reservoir opening place a curved instrument to press the primary Piston downward in order to take out both the Piston retainer and primary Piston assembly from the cylinder space. Insert the cylinder ports' plugs while forcing filtered air at low pressure into the front port to extract the secondary Piston and both seals along with the spring and dispose of the entire Piston assembly with the retainer and primary seal. Use denatured alcohol to wash and inspect every part of the master cylinder including the secondary Piston and return spring. Replace the unit if it shows damage. Put all parts through cleaned filtered air before putting delco supreme ii brake fluid from a clean package inside the master cylinder bore, secondary Piston , return spring, and other parts. Insert the lubricated new primary and secondary seals plus their retainer onto the secondary Piston. Next put the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore followed by the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Use a smooth instrument to position the new Piston retainer when you press down on the primary Piston using its round tip. Later connect the master cylinder reservoir components and reinstall the assembly back to its proper place in the car.
