2002 Chevrolet Malibu Brake Calipers Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2002 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Before working on the brake caliper check the brake master cylinder reservoir fluid level and remove fluid only when the level reaches the mid-point between its highest and lowest marks. Rise your vehicle and uninstall the wheel and tire set. Install two wheel nuts at a gentle torque to maintain the rotor connection. You can push the piston into the caliper bore through the power of a big c-clamp before pulling the entire caliper assembly away from the rotor. Plug the caliper housing and brake hose to avoid fluid leaks while you disconnect the hose bolt for the inlet fitting using appropriate tools and procedures. When removing the brake caliper you must first use a wrench to block the caliper pin while unscrewing the bolts. Afterwards take out the two guide pins and their boots from the caliper bracket . Check both guide pins and housing bores for rust damage then inspect boots for holes or scratches. Replace all defective pieces with fresh components. Add gm p/n 18010908 high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the caliper pins and boots before putting these parts into the caliper bracket. Secure the caliper mounting bolts to the bracket at 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.) tension before applying brake hose bolt with new sealing washers to the inlet fitting and tightening to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Place back the rotor's 2 wheel lug nuts on the hub and install the tire and wheel assembly for lowering the vehicle. Add brake fluid to the master cylinder to reach its required fill line then remove trapped air from the brake system while looking for fluid leaks.
