2001 Chevrolet Malibu Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace brake calipers on 2001 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: Begin brake caliper replacement by checking the brake master cylinder fluid level. Drain an adequate amount from the reservoir if the fluid stands above its midpoint between the highest and lowest marks. Lift the vehicle and set aside the wheel tire while you attach two wheel lugs to keep the rotor on the hub. Apply a large c-clamp to push the Piston in the caliper bore until the lining moves away from rotor then slowly begin to tighten the clamp until enough space exists to extract the caliper assembly. Plug all open caliper lines to block fluid leakage and contamination while you detach the hose bolt from the inlet fitting. Secure the caliper through a wire hook on the strut rather than allowing it to hang from the brake hose while undoing the mounting bolts. Separate the caliper from the rotor and bracket before taking out its two guide pins and guide pin boots from the bracket to check for corrosion and damage to the boots. Replace defective items before putting in the new caliper to avoid trouble. You should apply gm p/n 18010908 silicone brake lubricant or equivalent to caliper pins and boots before placing them back inside their bracket and affixing the caliper to its housing. Thread the caliper bolts in place and tighten them to 23 ft. Lbs. (31 Nm) before adding the brake hose bolt with two new sealing washers to the hose inlet. However, tighten this fitting to 37 ft. Lbs. (50 Nm). Turn off the wheel nuts holding the rotor then put on the mounted wheel before letting the vehicle rest on the ground. Put clean brake fluid into the master cylinder to reach its proper level. Perform hydraulic brake system bleeding before inspecting for any fluid leaks.
