2003 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the A/C Orifice Tube in an A/C system on 2003 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The first step to replace an A/C Orifice Tube includes refrigerant recovery from the A/C system. Following removal of the front evaporator tube to rear evaporator tube retaining bolt you should disconnect the front evaporator tube from the rear evaporator tube. Seal the open A/C components with caps or tape to stop contamination. Sever the O-ring and apply tape on top of the rear evaporator tube. Examine the A/C Orifice Tube for sign of a broken frame, filter screen damage, extending from a tarnished brass orifice or a clogged opening using the Orifice Tube Remover (J 26549-E). Make repairs as required before tube installation. The filter screen in this condition may be maintained with low-pressure shop air if its metal chip coating shows satisfactory cleanliness. A new O-ring must be added when reusing the A/C Orifice Tube. Install the tube by first inserting the short filter screen outlet side of the rear evaporator tube into the front evaporator tube completely. Put new O-rings on the expansion tube and attach the front evaporator tube to the rear evaporator tube before setting the front evaporator tube to rear evaporator tube retaining bolt which needs tightening to 25 N.m (18 lb ft). Evacuate and recharge the A/C system after which the component fittings should be tested using the Halogen Leak Detector (J 39400-A).
