2003 Chevrolet Corvette Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2003 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Follow these steps to remove and maintain the Brake Master Cylinder: 1) remove the component and fix the mounting flange to a bench vise for access to the back of the primary Piston. Check the exterior area of the master cylinder reservoir that surrounds the cap and remove it with its diaphragm before examining for damage such as cuts or cracks or nicks or deformation and replace damaged components. Use a smooth round tool to push down the primary Piston while removing the Piston holder before taking out the Piston assembly from the cylinder bore. Apply filtered and non-lubricated low-pressure air into the front outlet while plugging the inlet ports and the rear outlet ports in order to extract the secondary Piston together with the primary Piston and secondary seals and return spring. Throw away the primary Piston assembly, Piston retainer and the seals that belong to the secondary Piston. Master cylinder and secondary Piston and return spring must have their interior and exterior cleaned with denatured alcohol while checking for cracks and the presence of pitting and scoring and corrosion. Replace the master cylinder when any issues are found during inspection. All components must be dried using filtered non-lubricated air before the master cylinder bore and secondary Piston and return spring and all overhaul components receive lubrication with delco supreme 11, inch hg p/n 12377967 (Canadian P/N 992667) brake fluid or its equivalent from a clean sealed brake fluid container. Use lubricated new primary seal and retainer combined with new secondary seal to build up the secondary Piston before you install the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore followed by the lubricated new primary Piston assembly . A round-ended smooth tool should be used for depressing the primary Piston before installing the new Piston retainer. Master cylinder reservoir must be reconnected after installing its cap and diaphragm before reinstallation of the master cylinder.
