2003 Chevrolet Impala Rod Bearing Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the connecting rod bearing on 2003 Chevrolet Impala?
A: Implement the following tools for connecting Rod Bearing replacement: using the connecting rod bolt guide set (J 5239) with an electronic torque angle meter (J 36660-A). Connecting rod bolt guide set (J 5239) and electronic torque angle meter (J 36660-A). Start by taking out both the spark plugs and the Oil Pan from the worked cylinders. Begin by positioning the serviced connecting rod at bottom dead center (BDC) by turning the Crankshaft before you can remove the Oil Pump bolt followed by the Oil Pump along with its driveshaft. You need to remove both the nuts securing the Crankshaft oil deflector and the deflector piece itself. After nuts are removed from the connecting rod cap one can separate the cap, lower connecting Rod Bearing and keep all original components to assemble again. The connecting rod bolt guide set (J 5239) must be installed onto the connecting rod before you remove its bearing from the connecting rod cap. Use the guide to elevate the piston and connecting rod for access to the upper connecting Rod Bearing for removal. Clean oil off the bearings before performing inspections along with bearing clearance measurements. Apply clean engine oil to the bearing surfaces followed by upper connecting Rod Bearing installation using the connecting rod bolt guide set (J 5239) to pull down piston and connecting rod and upper bearing before guide removal. Insert the connecting rod cap's lower bearing then assemble the cap with its nuts. Tighten the nuts to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) level before continuing with electronic torque angle meter (J 36660-A) to reach a torque of 75°. Use a prying motion to check for resistance when moving the connecting rod and adjust the cap nuts when needed. Install the Crankshaft oil deflector with its nuts and use a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before proceeding with measurements for connecting rod side clearance. Replace the Oil Pump driveshaft and Oil Pump in that order then apply torque to the Oil Pump bolt at 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). The repair process ends with reinstalling spark plugs followed by the Oil Pan while conducting leak and proper oil pressure inspections.
