2004 Cadillac XLR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should you safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on 2004 Cadillac XLR?
A: Personal injury may result if you remove the snap ring located inside the tube because gas charged shock absorbers contain high pressure gas that would be forcefully expelled. Use protective eyewear for centerpunching and drilling shock absorber components while keeping the tube from puncture by the centerpunch tool. Placing a centerpunch mark 10 mm deep at the bottom edge of the tube serves as the first step. Set up the shock absorber rod in complete extension within a vise being held horizontally. Drill this hole in the shock absorber through the centerpunch location using a 5mm (3/16 inch) drill bit for pressure release. Ensure to catch the expelled oil or gas using shop towels. An indentation at the tube's middle requires a centerpunch followed by drilling the resulting hole at the centerpunch using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit to release oil. Shop towels should be used to control the oil flow. To drain the oil from the shock absorber you should extract it from the vise and position the holes at the bottom facing downwards across a drain pan before passing the rod through the tube to fully drain the fluid.
