- Q: How should you safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on 2005 Cadillac XLR?A: Personal injury could occur when you remove the snap ring from inside the top of the tube since gas charged shock absorbers contain high pressure gas that will propel contents with extreme force. Wear protective safety glasses while drilling the shock absorber tube since centerpunching and avoid any damage to this tube structure. Use a centerpunch to create a 10 mm (0.4 inch) indentation on the tube bottom at a point 10 mm (0.4 inches) above the bottom. Position the shock absorber rod fully straight while mounting the device onto a vise for horizontal placement. Drill a 5 mm (3/16 inch) hole at the centerpunch mark in the shock absorber to let gas or gas/oil mixture escape while containment occurs through shop towels. Drilling the second hole at the middle indentation requires repeating the process of centerpunching followed by using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit. Shop towels must contain the escaping oil during this operation. Complete removal of oil from the shock absorber can be achieved by keeping it horizontal in the drain pan with holes facing down while moving the rod through the tube.
