2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring in the Steering Wheel on 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: The sir system needs disabling before starting the replacement of the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil and the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module must be removed. Start by removing the Steering Wheel nut while making note of the Steering Wheel alignment mark against the Steering Shaft. Start by removing the Steering Wheel after pulling out the tilt lever straight then removing the tilt lever assembly. Begin by removing 2 torx(r) head screws from the lower shroud before taking off the lower shroud and then remove 2 torx(r) head screws from the upper shroud and detach the upper shroud. Disconnect the wire harness straps from the Steering Wheel column wire harness before removing the retaining ring and the air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft where you should discard the old coil if replacing. When putting it together position the wheels directly ahead while lining up the block tooth and centering mark at the 12 o'clock mark. Refer to the coil assembly notice for instructions on performing centering. Premounted centering takes place during the new air bag clock spring production process. Leave the centering tab intact until you finish installation of the air bag clock spring. Slide the new air bag clock spring onto the Steering Shaft assembly after aligning its assembly with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly. Push the retaining ring deeply into the Steering Shaft assembly and then peel off the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring. Secure both the upper and lower shrouds in place using torx(r) head screws tightened to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Then install the torx(r)-head screws on the lower shroud while also tightening them to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). The tilt lever handle on vehicles with a tilt column should align and slide into the steering column until it secures in position. First feed the wiring through the Steering Wheel before you align the wheel with the Steering Shaft mark then place the wheel on the shaft and tighten the nut to 41 n.m (30 lb ft). Finish by installing the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module then activate the sir system.
