2004 Chevrolet Classic Brake Line Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the brake line using the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit on 2004 Chevrolet Classic?
A: The brake pipe replacement requires the J 45405 Pipe Flaring Tool Kit (J 45405) along with necessary safety protocols for brake fluid irritants and the use of double-walled steel brake pipes to avert system failure. The first step is to visually check the section of brake pipe before you free it from its retainers. To determine the length of the replacement pipe section add the tube flare requirements which should be 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) for 4.76 mm (3/16 inch) diameter pipe. Shut off the brake pipe to the exact measurement with the pipe cutter that comes with J 45405. After removing the sectioned pipe choose the correct brake pipe size along with tube nuts. Remove nylon coating from the brake pipe ends using the J 45405's coating stripping tool but avoid damaging the metal surface. Clean the tool J 45405 alongside the brake pipe before you install tube nuts and generate the pipe flares through inside and outside diameter chamfering with the provided de-burring tool. Set the appropriate die cage and mount the prepared pipe section before clamping the screw to complete the installation. Select an appropriate forming mandrel before operating the lever of the J 45405 to create a flare which should have a 7.10 mm (0.279 inch) diameter while its width must be between 7.10 mm (0.279 inch) and 7.28 mm (0.285 inch) with a tolerance of 0.18 mm (0.007 inch) for the 4.76 mm (3/16 inch) diameter pipe. Use an appropriate bending tool to form the new pipe while ensuring 19 mm (3/4 inch) distance to all moving parts and install the bent pipe to retainers. The hydraulic brake system needs bleeding followed by a leak inspection of the flares while the brakes experience application.
