- Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?A: To service and repair the Starter motor, you should first detangle the negative cable from the battery. The Starter motor is non serviceable and has to be replaced as a complete unit. Lift the vehicle, clear the lower air deflector and the torque converter covers. The Starter solenoid bat terminal nut and positive Battery Cable must be disconnected from the Starter motor, followed by the Starter solenoid s terminal nut and Starter solenoid wire. Undo the Starter bolts (1,2) and Starter motor. For the installation, align the Starter motor towards the engine and tighten the Starter bolts (1,2) finger tight until they seat into place and further tighten them to 43 n.m (32 lb ft). Second, put the positive Battery Cable and the solenoid bat terminal nut finger tight, then the Starter solenoid wire and the Starter solenoid s terminal nut finger tight. The solenoid bat terminal nut is to be tightened to 10 n.m (89 lb in) while the Starter solenoid s terminal nut is to be tightened at a torque of 2.3 n.m (20.5 lb in). Finally, re-install the torque converter covers, it's lower air deflector, lowering of the vehicle, and reconnect the negative Battery Cable.
