2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Brake Master Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Before starting Brake Master Cylinder work you must detach it from the vehicle but keep the flange mounted in the vise while making sure the rear of the primary Piston stays reachable. Clean the reservoir surface around the cap first before taking it off and the diaphragm. Check the parts for damage and replace them if necessary. Insert a smooth rounded tool to push down the primary Piston while you take off the Piston retainer and primary Piston from the cylinder bore. Place plugs on inlet and outlet ports of the cylinder housing and direct low-pressure air through its front port while removing the secondary Piston assembly plus the main barrel seal with its spring. Remove all parts from the secondary Piston including the primary assembly and its parts. Clean all parts of the master cylinder with denatured alcohol or alternative while inspecting for damages to avoid replacing the entire system. Put utilized components through filtered non-lubricated air then wet the master cylinder bore plus both secondary Piston and return spring with dot-3 brake fluid from a sealed supply. Attach a new primary seal and retainer with new secondary seal to the secondary Piston and insert it into the cylinder bore along with the lubricated return spring. Finishing the process with the lubricated new primary Piston assembly. Apply a rounded tool to compress the primary Piston while you put the new Piston retainer in place. After that, reconnect both the master cylinder reservoir and its safety components and reinstall the master cylinder on the vehicle.
