2004 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: In order to replace the Timing Chain and sprockets, first, push off the Oil Pump and rotate the Crankshaft so that the timing marks on the Crankshaft and the camshaft get aligned and do not turn the Crankshaft assembly after the Timing Chain element has been removed to avoid damage to the piston assemblies or valves. Then, unfasten the camshaft sprocket bolts, the sprocket and Timing Chain. Remove the Crankshaft sprocket with the help of j 8433 two jaw puller (J 8433), j 41816-2 Crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2), and j 41558 Crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558) and the Crankshaft sprocket key if necessary. Clean and check the Timing Chain and sprockets before installing them. If the key was removed, put it in the Crankshaft keyway, tapping until both ends sit. Mount the Crankshaft sprocket to the front end of the Crankshaft and align the Crankshaft key with the sprocket keyway, and with the j 41665 Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665), fully seat the sprocket against the Crankshaft flange. Rotate the Crankshaft sprocket until the alignment mark comes to 12 o'clock position, thereby ensuring the locating pin in the cam shaft sprocket aligns with the alignment hole and ensuring that the sprocket teeth and the Timing Chain fit together. Lining up the camshaft and Crankshaft sprocket marks, install the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain, adjust if required to fit the timing marks in line. Finally, install the camshaft sprocket bolts and tight to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs), and reinstall the Oil Pump.
