  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2005 Chevrolet SSR?
    A: To replace the Timing Chain and sprockets one must firstly, remove the Oil Pump and rotate the Crankshaft to align the marks on the Crankshaft and camshaft sprockets so as to avoid turning the Crankshaft assembly once the Timing Chain has been removed to avoid damaging the piston assemblies or valves. Then, unscrew camshaft sprocket bolts, followed by the camshaft sprocket and the Timing Chain. Use the j 8433 two jaw puller (J 8433), j 41816-2 Crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and j 41558 Crankshaft sprocket remover (J 41558) to remove the Crankshaft sprocket then remove the Crankshaft sprocket key if needed. The components include a Timing Chain and sprockets. Before installation, make sure that you clean and inspect them. If key were removed to install the key into Crankshaft keyway tapping it in so that the key is seated on both ends. Mount the Crankshaft sprocket on the front end of the Crankshaft and align the Crankshaft key with the sprocket keyway and then use the j 41665 Crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) to seat the sprocket fully against the Crankshaft flange. Rotate the Crankshaft sprocket to adjust the alignment mark on the preferred at 12 o'clock then align the camshaft sprocket locating pin using the alignment hole in such a way that the sprocket teeth and Timing Chain intersect correctly. Position the cam and the Crankshaft sprocket marks, set the camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain, and if needed, advance the sprockets to align the timing marks. Lastly, replace the camshaft sprocket bolts with a torque of 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.), and replace the Oil Pump.
