2005 Chevrolet SSR Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2005 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The replacement process for a crankshaft balancer requires among other tools a crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665) along with a crankshaft balancer remover (J 41816) and crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) and a Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) as well as a torque angle meter (J 45059). The first step involves removing the accessory Drive Belt then the air conditioning Drive Belt (if present) together with the cooling fan along with the Starter motor. Installing the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) requires matching its teeth to the engine Flywheel teeth. The crankshaft balancer does not need any preliminary marking before being removed. The installer should use the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) with m10-1.5 x 120 mm and m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolts which must be tightened to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). You should remove the crankshaft balancer bolt since you will use it again when installing. The crankshaft balancer remover (J 41816) in conjunction with crankshaft end protector (J 41816-2) enables the removal of the crankshaft balancer after cleaning for inspection. The installation process requires the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) to fit correctly with the engine Flywheel. A four-step installation process should be followed using the crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J 41665), starting with tightening the used crankshaft balancer bolt to 330 nm (240 ft. Lbs.) before removal. The crankshaft nose position must fall between 2.4 - 4.48 mm (0.094 - 0.176 inch) into the balancer bore when checked. Reinstall if necessary. A new crankshaft balancer bolt needs installation and follows this procedure with initial tightening at 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before reaching 140° with the torque angle meter (J 45059). To complete the installation replace the Starter motor and cooling fan as well as the accessory Drive Belt and a/c Drive Belt after removing the Flywheel holding tool (J 42386-A) and its bolts.
