- Q: How to replace the harmonic balancer on 2004 GMC Savana 1500?A: People need to acquire the following tools to replace a crankshaft balancer: j45059 angle meter, j41816 crankshaft balancer remover and j41816-2 crankshaft end protector and j42386-a flywheel holding tool and j41665 crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer. Start by removing the air conditioning Drive Belt if your vehicle has it or else proceed with removing the accessory Drive Belt. The maintenance process begins by taking away both the lower Fan Shroud and the Starter motor component. The j42386-a should have its teeth engaged with engine flywheel teeth whereas no marking process is required on the crankshaft balancer before its removal. Fasten the j42386-a by installing one m10-1.5 x 120 mm and one m10-1.5 x 45 mm bolt and torque them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The crankshaft balancer bolt needs to be removed and should be used again for the installation. The j41816 alongside its counterpart j41816-2 should be used for removing the crankshaft balancer before it goes through cleaning and inspection procedures. To install the balancer position it directly on the crankshaft before using the j41665 to achieve alignment. Pass the threaded rod combined with nut and washer through the installer so the smaller end locks within the balancer while applying torque until the crankshaft starts to roll into place. The installation tool should reverse direction and the tightening process should begin until the balancer achieves complete installation. Reinstall the used crankshaft balancer bolt while applying torque of 330 nm (240 ft. Lbs.) before tightening it. A new crankshaft balancer bolt needs installation following an initial torque to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) followed by torque to 140 degrees using the j45059.
